It was my mother’s wish for her ashes to be interred under a tree in a wood. Dalton fit the bill perfectly with its mix of young and mature trees. Moss is growing on rockes and the atmosphere is peaceful, almost enchanted. I found the service excellent – just the right level of support without being intrusive. Very happy with our choice indeed

It is a very peaceful way to have a burial in a beautiful woodland and not at all corporate – it is much kinder. It was the perfect spot for my beloved husband who loved nature, walking, limestone scenery and trees. It was lovely to be natural and non-religious. I feel it was such a peaceful place and I was well supported by Francis. the support from him and information was so helpful. I feel that in the darkest moments these woodlands created such a beam of light and brightness which was extremely comforting as the sun was shining so magically through the treetops down onto the grave and my husband.

As a first time experience it was more fitting than a ‘normal’ funeral. The location is a lovely secluded & peaceful place very much in keeping with what Mum loved. She found out about natural burials a few years ago after seeing an article on the BBC about them (probably on the One Show or Countryfile) and can only assume she looked into it further as it was what she wanted. Though we did discuss it in general principle we only covered the details the week before she died

It did not cost us anything as they do not charge for a child burial and the government cover the grave digger fee. Our baby’s funeral was as perfect as it could be considering these are our darkest times. We plan to be buried here with our baby.

Ours was a simple burial with poems, prose and music played by a violinist in the woodland with just close family & friends. Very moving and exactly as requested by the deceased.

When reconnoitering the site before the interment it was pouring with rain so a bit muddy & gloomy but on the day of the interment trees were coming into leaf and the sun shone; birds were singing making the whole occasion very special. Elderly mourners were taken by vehicle direct to the grave plot so didn’t have to struggle. We had the whole site to ourselves and could stay as long as we wanted.

We did not want a formal funeral so we were able to go to this peaceful place and conduct the burial with our own prayers. We liked the fact that it is run as a nutural woodland without gravestones or ornaments.

This site is perfect for my husband and myself (I have booked the adjacent grave site for myself) and was a gentle place to ‘hold’ the family in their grief and enable us to conduct the ceremony we wished which was beautiful. The burial ground were completely supportive of everything that we as a family felt it was important to do. We chose not to use funeral directors and wanted complete involvement including dressing the deceased, leaving personal (biodegradable) items in the woven coffin (using British sustainably sourced willow made personally for him), carrying him ourselves, driving him in our Land Rover, decorating the coffin and graveside with garden flowers and filling in the garve. Our need for ‘hands-on’ involvement was completely respected, understood & supported. I am a celebrant and was very clear about what was right for myself and the family. It makes all the difference to accept and process the very deep loss of someone we loved so very much.

I can’t comment on cost as all funerals are expensive but we were given as much time as necessary in a natural woodland setting which we appreciated. We were free for grandchildren to carry their grandfather which was wonderful.

I found the staff very respectful. After my father’s burial there was an unfortunate delay with the stone but this was dealt with courteously and promptly. My mother’s stone was in place for the burial service which was very comforting.

It was a lucky day when we did that walk. Our then contact with Mr Mason-Hornby was so friendly, patient and easy. We are keen naturalists / environmentalits & the woodland burial ground is perfect. Luckily we had discussed funerals many years ago. Being outdoor people, hiking, camping, birdwatching, this seemed an obvious choice. Finding how environmentally sustainable this is compared to cremation confirmed our decision.

Exceptional. Francis took the time to explain the day, site and concept. An extermely kind man. I found this site online, it seemed right but was even more perfect when I visited. The whole concept was just right for my husband who loved nature & was so concerned about ecology… what makes it so right is that it looks like a beautiful woodland & not a cemetery. A peaceful, reflective & beautiful place for us to visit & walk around.
Tributes should also be paid to Francis who took trouble to show us around unprompted even though he was awaiting a funeral. He was friendly & compassionate to me in my loss and approachable. On our funeral day he was supremely organised, pleasant & friendly to mourners and at the end gave me a big hug and smile saying it had been a lovely service.
The whole experience was a celebration and was far from the mournful occasion it might have been. We were treated sensitively and respectfully and extremely kindly by all the staff and this means such a lot.

The funeral and burial have been a very positive process. The woodland on Monday felt magical – with the sun filtering through the filigree of branches in the canopy and a breeze passing through gently swaying the trees around the burial glade. People were very moved by the setting.

despite worrying about how friends & family would cope with a different type of burial, everyone said how peaceful and beautiful it was and much more pleasant that cemetery etc.
